Need to find someone to paint and do minor repairs in house?

May 7th, 2010
ty asked:

I’m going to buy a “sold as-is” house assuming it’s in good shape after the inspection. The house is approximately 2700 sq ft. The previous owners did a terrible job of painting every room in the house. There’s paint on the baseboards, trim, crown molding, ceiling, terrible faux finishes, wallpaper…You get the idea? Also, they took every single light fixture, smoke detector, and the home alarm system. The house also need MINOR repairs to the sheetrock just from normal wear and tear.

How do I find a company that can handle all of these repairs including installing new light fixtures, smoke detectors, etc. About how much do you think this should cost? It’s primarily paint.

aeva117 asked:

our smoke alarms keep going off, but there’s no smoke! We think it may be because our house just got painted. But they won’t stop! We had to shut the power to them off (and therefore the lights) to get some quiet. Taking the batteries our doesn’t work…what can we do?

How do I find a Burglar/Fire Protection System Installer not connected to Monitoring Company?

May 1st, 2010
ACK & DJ asked:

I would like to have an alarm system installed in my house using an independent contractor so I can buy a better system for cheap and then negotiate my monitoring contract with a company. My electrician says he doesn’t do it. Is this unheard of in the industry? What kind of contractor would do this kind of installation?

Chirping smoke alarms?

April 30th, 2010
BillsBud asked:

I just got a new house that has a security/fire system installed (and I don’t want to pay to use). There is a smoke alarm in every room and some of them continue to chirp (loudly) even after changing the batteries. They are wired into the system and the previous owners took the alarm keypad. How do I get them to shut up?

My car alarm went off tonight and i was in the house. I am afraid to go outside. What might have set it off?

April 24th, 2010
here_4_1_day asked:

I was walking down the stairs of my house when i thought i heard a car alarm, i went towards my kitchen (near the driveway) and it was my car (2008 Toyota Matrix) that was going off. It stopped when i looked out the window. I grabbed my car keys and hit the panic button (thinking there was someone trying to take my car) and then i armed the car after about 30 seconds. It beeped (to say it was armed). I am now afriad to go outside to look at my car to see if anything did happen to it. It is 11:30pm right now and i need to go out at 12:30. What might have set it off besides someone trying to steal it?
I am parked in my private drive way. No one there to hit it, but there is an open gate

Brick House making a pattern of crackling sound?

April 20th, 2010
TC asked:

I am a new home owner who has lived in an apartment all my life. Please excuse my “dumb” question. I just recently noticed that my house with wood floors downstairs/carpet upstairs is making almost a pattern of noise. The short burst of crackle (like stepping on a wood floor) comes from different rooms, 5 cracks within 2-3 minutes. It sounds like it is coming from the upstairs more.

Is it the heater making this noise or a foundation issue or anything else I should be alarm about? The house is about 80 years old, so wouldn’t be settling of a new house. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

The smoke alarms in my house beep every 30 seconds even with brand new batteries. I bought new batteries today (for the second time) just to be sure and they still beep every 30 seconds. Why?!

Are these cookies safe to eat?

April 13th, 2010
star28mama asked:

I made some chocolate chip cookies today and lined the cookie sheets with waxed paper thinking that I would save myself some clean-up. I didn’t realize that parchment paper was what I should have used. After setting off the smoke alarm and airing out the house for 30 minutes, I am wondering if the cookies are safe to eat. The waxed paper melted a little bit and definitely smoked out the house, but it didn’t stick to the cookies. Are my cookies toxic now?

Any ideas for safely locking a motorcycle in a condo parking lot?

April 9th, 2010
Dire Wolf asked:

I am moving into a condo from a house. I used to have my motorcycle safely stashed in the garage at the house, but now it will be out in the open. I use my car to go to work usually so the motorcycle will be left alone during those days. But I am also concerned about it at night. I have seen wheel locks with built in alarms which seem like they would work in conjunction with a heavy chain. There are no light poles or anything sturdy to lock the bike onto, and I think the condo assoc. will make me keep it in a parking slot, so I can’t chain it to a tree on the lawn. Does anyone have any creative solutions? Anyone have experience with LoJack? I will be so bummed out to come home one day to have it gone because a couple of guys lifted it into the back of their truck and took off…
